The diffusion, increase and care of culture, especially among young people, is probably the fundamental pillar of the Pro Loco mission and the one, perhaps, without which, everything would be useless and would collapse.

Let it be clear that by culture we do not mean the simple memorization of dates and events or that which is often confused with the characteristic "piece of paper" to be taken after years of school, nor even that which many people nowadays think of acquiring via the so-called “social media” such as Facebook, Instagram or similar. We almost defined that as a “subculture”.

By culture we mean the constant research, knowledge, study and accurate documentation of world, national and local historical facts and events as well as places, people, cults and traditions, especially those closest to our local reality, the anamnesis of the antecedents  and the critical analysis of what generated them, how they evolved as well as the positive and negative consequences they brought, and the effect they have had and continue to have on our society and daily life.  All this framed in the cosmological reality that surrounds us shaped by the words, thoughts and actions of those who preceded us.

But in a country with an agricultural and artisanal tradition, culture also means knowing how to "read" nature and being masters in putting it at the service of all of us without violating it.

Like Don Lorenzo Milani we refer to the unsurpassed knowledge that our farmers have of how, where and when to cultivate our often impervious land, which requires enormous physical effort to put it at the service of man. They know how to scrutinize its signs from the clouds that overlap, warning of rain, to the buds that appear on the hazelnut, chestnut and olive trees bearing fruit to support our life. And our craftsmen who with expert hands for millennia have inlaid doors and facades of churches such as those of the Carita' or of the Piazza or of our house, with statues and pulpits, or simply created from simple trunks, tables, chairs, wardrobes and even altars  ;or built walls and houses.

There is not and will never be a university professor capable of cultivating the land or making a piece of furniture or even putting up a drywall like our ancestors and our craftsmen. This is the culture we refer to and are proud of.

Culture also means treasuring the testimonies of the past, taking care of them, preserving them and spreading their knowledge.

Culture, in a metaphorical sense, is similar to a torch. A torch that is passed from generation to generation. Woe betide it if it were to go out or fade away.

We need to keep it alive. May it shine in the night. Especially in the night of ignorance, of divisions, of "I don't care", of "nothing is ever done here". Culture makes you free, strong, protagonists. But beware of getting sick of protagonism. It is nourished and progresses in humility and in the tireless search for new things as well as in availability.

Culture is not envious and arrogant, but promotes and unites, it is humble and immense.

Culture is being curious. study, observe, analyse, ask why things happen, learn, put into practice.  But always with respect, positivity, love and faith.

Culture means looking far ahead. Beyond the wall or the open space of our house, the trees and mountains of the valley. The rivers and sea of Italy. Beyond time and space.

Culture is acting, daring, putting yourself  at stake, be curious, take risks. Even making mistakes sometimes as long as the mistakes are recognized and serve as a springboard for the future and for correcting them.

Culture is finally having an idea and an ideal and being willing to do anything to defend and spread it without being afraid and without losing hope.  Never.

This idea of culture has had several examples and promoters in Moschiano over the years. All our fathers and grandfathers  but also, to cite a few examples, Michele Caputo in the 1930s, the Cultural Club of the 1960s, Prof. Carmine Pacia to whom a street is dedicated, Prof. Anna Laura Palumbieri to whom a small square is dedicated, the Prof. Pasquale Moschiano originally from Moschiano but adopted by Lauro and others who have often established themselves far from Moschiano or Vallo. They are all more recent examples of the materialization of this type of culture. But not only them. Also think of all those who wake up every morning and go to the fields, to the shops, to the workplace and to the countless  other sons of Moschiano who have earned themselves honor over the years and continue to do so at home or throughout the world with the exhibition of a virtue that we are proud to have. They too are part, and perhaps even more so, of our cultural entity and heritage.

A people and a country without culture and without supporters and exporters of culture is destined to die. The mission of the Pro Loco is to ensure that life continues.
