Amarcord 70s
The Decade that shaped us

1980
(Published 19 August 2020)

A new decade was beginning. The 70s were almost behind us with their sad but also beautiful memories. Everyone hoped that the massacres, divisions, attacks and natural disasters were over. Unfortunately, we would soon have to change our minds with the massacres in Ustica and Bologna and at the end of the year the earthquake in Irpinia.

That year in February there were Carnival festivities again. In spring, given the success of the initiatives completed by the Michele Caputo Association, it was decided to formalize it legally as well. On 30 April 1980 in front of the Notary Maria Giulia Tranfaglia di Lauro (who gave us the sum and the charges we would have had to pay for the drafting and registration of the deed) we went to sign the deed of incorporation of the Pro-Loco Michele Caputo. (Click here for Link on Pro Loco history). The stylist Marco Arpaia was elected first President. The founding members were: Don Salvatore Pierro, Don Peppino Manfredi, Rosa Cuozzo, Carmine Manfredi, Franca Volino, Lino Pacia, Avv Pietro Manfredi, Marco Arpaia, Dott Eligio Dalia, Rizziero Settembre, Sabato Pacia. The Mayor pro Tempore Mimi' Moschiano also entered the Board of Directors by right.

We immediately got to work. So in addition to the now well-established Estate Moschianese (that year we also introduced a maypole in Capomoschiano with rich prizes offered by the food traders of Moschiano and won by Sebastiano (Nanuccio) Rubinaccio and his team). ideas were sought in the Pro Loco to further enhance the town and the territory. In those years the village festivals began to take hold. Since after years of lean in the Vallo area the production, processing and trade of chestnuts was beginning to recover, we decided that we would give the our contribution by organizing a festival.

However, in addition to the recreational aspect, it also had to have a cultural aspect and bring long-term practical benefits to the producers, workers and traders of the product and to the country as a whole.

It was therefore decided that we would hold it towards the end of October and divide it into two evenings (25th and 26th October). In the first there would have been a conference where we would have presented, discussed and tried to find solutions to a current problem to be chosen year by year, while in the second we would have offered music, games and gastronomic tastings based on local products.

So it was. With the help of the municipal administration and the Provincial Tourism Board (EPT) we invited a representative of the Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) to hold a conference/debate on the local production and marketing of chestnuts abroad.

For the second evening, however, at Marco's house we prepared a series of desserts which we offered for free tasting in the square where games were played, there was music, dancing, etc.

With the help of a mimeograph that Don Salvatore had at the office and which we had used over the years to print many other things (from songs for the Church to speeches, circular letters, etc.) we also prepared a little book with chestnut-based recipes to distribute to the guests who would come. The cover was designed by Tina Cuozzo.

It was the first Chestnut Festival in Moschiano. Meanwhile the musical group had evolved once again. Lino and Sergio, with the help and participation of a group of Lauro's friends, formed the musical group "Il Richiamo di Circe".
