Even though the Sanctuary and the altar have a very ancient history, the current high altar (as well as the statue of the Madonna) most likely dates back to the end of the 1930s when it was almost completely rebuilt after the fire of 1928. Further details on the Church altar and the statue can be found in Pasquale Moschiano's book which can be consulted here . The story in Prof Moschiano's book ends in 1973. Unfortunately in the following years the Sanctuary suffered several thefts. In addition to the paintings on the side altars, the main altar suffered the loss of the original frontal as well as the capitals that supported the marble. Even the pelican that adorned the tabernacle disappeared, we don't know when, as can be seen clearly by comparing the photos of 2024 and that of 1983. The altar is cataloged by Cultural Heritage under # 1500047453
